Behind the Screens: Doug Scales
This summer PBS Digital welcomed Doug Scales to the team as the Senior Director in charge of Digital Marketing. Doug will be working closely with several PBS departments and teams with a digital perspective up our digital marketing game. Welcome Doug!
Describe your role on the PBS Digital team...
I am responsible for growing audience and engagement by leveraging key digital marketing channels including email, social, content marketing, OTT, mobile apps, web and more as well as cross promotions and integration with non-digital PBS marketing initiatives.
What’s the hardest lesson you've learned working in public media?
I am relatively new to public media but have many years of experience in digital, entertainment, and media marketing. I have learned that passion, commitment, and hard work go a long way.
Based on what you know now, if you could go back to your first day at PBS and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Well that was less than three months ago. I'm not sure I'd advise myself to do things much differently other than maybe drink more coffee.
What’s one newsletter you think everyone should subscribe to?
It will be an updated/new PBS newsletter in 2016. We're working on it…
What’s your favorite YouTube channel (or digital first program)?
PBS Digital Studios – exceptional, intelligent, thought-provoking and fun content.
What is your favorite mobile app?
Lately – Audible. Lots of books on Audio and NYT on audio during long commutes.
What do you think are the upcoming trends in the digital world?
Certainly a continuation of more cord-cutting and more fragmentation of programming and time-shifting. This represents a big opportunity as well.
If you could have a Google Hangout with any three people, who would you choose?
Steve Jobs, my grandfather, John F. Kennedy.
