Oklahoma’s state network dominated the television competition at the 2015 state Society of Professional Journalists awards. At the annual awards ceremony on May 16, OETA (Oklahoma Educational Television Authority) led all Oklahoma television organizations with 21 awards, including 11 for 1st Place. OETA’s Lis Exon also earned a special recognition for mental health reporting.
OETA’s Oklahoma News Report (ONR) made history by winning 1st Place in Best Television Newscast – a first for public television in Oklahoma – while competing against every television news program in the state. ONR captured the 1st Place trophy after placing 2nd and 3rd twice in the four preceding years, making OETA the only Oklahoma television journalism organization to receive an SPJ award each year during that five-year span.
In the last five years, OETA leads all Oklahoma television broadcasters with 99 total Oklahoma SPJ awards (36 for 1st Place). Again this year, it was truly a team effort as the 15 people winning awards represented OETA’s News & Public Affairs, Documentary and Production departments.
