New Google Search Algorithm

Google is launching major changes to its search algorithm on April 21st, 2015. The new algorithm is focused on making it easier for mobile users to find content that is optimized for their devices.

This means that mobile-friendly sites will get a bump in their search rankings. You want to make sure that your site meets Google’s mobile guidelines.

What to know:
  • Google is scanning the Internet and evaluating websites against a set of criteria to determine if the site is “mobile friendly.”
  • Google determines that a site is mobile-friendly if it:
    • Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash
    • Uses text that is readable without zooming
    • Sizes content to the screen so users don't have to scroll horizontally or zoom
    • Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped

How do you know whether Google considers your site to be “mobile friendly”? It’s easy! Enter your URL in here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/. Google will scan your site and deliver a report.

Also coming in this update are improved search results for mobile apps. If your app is indexed with Google and users have it installed on their phone, app pages can appear in search results. Learn more here: https://developers.google.com/app-indexing/webmasters/details
