Twitter Tuesday: Measuring Influence

Does a high follower count on Twitter always imply a high level of influence? Not necessarily. According to researchers at Stanford University, a person's influence is measured in three distinct ways.

First, a person's follower count implies popularity, retweets represent the value of their content, and mentions show the name value of the user. By analyzing a large amount of Twitter data, the researchers found that the most influential users carried clout over a variety of topics.

For ordinary users, however, they found the best way to gain influence is by "focusing on a single topic and posting creative and insightful tweets that are perceived as valuable by others, as opposed to simply conversing with others."
