Incubation Lab Coming to Town

We don't accomplish anything in this world alone ... and whatever happens is
the result of the whole tapestry of one's life and all the weavings of
individual threads from one to another that creates something.
-- Sandra Day O'Connor, U.S. Supreme Court Justice

Few things represent the essence of public media like collaboration. The public media mission of service to and inclusion of the community is mirrored in the good that can come from sharing knowledge and ability in a collaborative effort.

A sustainable, ongoing collaborative effort has generally been a challenge among PBS stations. Resource availability, varying skill levels and technological challenges combine to make identifying a single collaborative solution that can successfully serve station professionals difficult and why many previous efforts have yielded mixed results.

With this spirit, and these challenges, in mind Station Products & Innovation is launching The Incubation Lab,  a new approach to collaboration that focuses on the needs of the station user in order to foster collaborative product building and learning.

Over the next few months, we will be launching a number of features of the Incubation Lab designed to make opportunities for station professionals easier to find and participate in. Here is a look at what's coming:

Presented by Incubation Lab: A blog series aimed at finding, highlighting and celebrating the efforts of stations in the new media landscape. These regular profiles of products and individuals can provide you with inspiration and potential collaborators for your own projects. Launching in early February on this blog.

Incubation Lab Knowledge Series:  Beginning in March, you will have a chance to hear your peers discuss their successes and lessons learned in this unique professional development webinar series. No one knows the challenges you face in your day-to-day like those going through the same thing. Look for announcements in this blog and through our newsletter.

Incubation Profiles: Launching in mid-to-late February, this database will detail the strengths of each station’s new media products and professionals, and provide a way for your station to instantly be eligible for any beta-testing or product pilot that becomes available. In addition, the database will also be used to provide opportunities for individuals to educate and be educated by each other through a professional development framework.

Incubator: Using the Profiles as a way to identify employed technologies throughout the system, the SP&I team will manage quick collaborative build sessions for products we hear a need for. Aggregating your feedback we will bring station professionals together to help solve some of your most difficult product challenges. While we have successfully beta tested this, a formal launch will happen this Spring.

One of the strengths of the PBS system is its ability to remain relevant to and address the needs of a rapidly changing world. Nowhere is this more evident than at local stations, whose missions to serve the public drive them to evolve their impact and efficacy in unique ways.

We hope the Incubation Lab helps make your ability to deliver on your mission to your community that much easier. Looking forward to continue working with you all!
